Eight months of planning our second sportsman’s dinner came down to the one night on 26th November 2016.  Set in the exquisite location of the marquee room at the Victoria Park golf complex, overlooking the city, friends and friends of friends gathered to raise money for Play for a Cure Foundation to allow us to fund critical cancer research.

Get ready to be smashed out of the park Brisbane!

The next big Play for a Cure Yellow Socks Charity Softball Challenge between legends and current stars of the NRMA Brisbane Broncos and the Play for a Cure Softball All Stars will be held on Saturday 3rd December at the Downey Park Softball Complex, Green Terrace, Windsor.

The Broncos line-up includes legends Darren Lockyer, Petero Civenocevia, Gorden Tallis and Michael DeVere.

The ‘Play for a Cure’ SoftballAll Stars include current Australian Captain & Olympian Stacey Porter, current ‘Aussie Spirit’ player Chelsea Forkin and Olympians Mel Roche and Haylea Petrie.

The teams will wear yellow socks representing the daffodil flower used internationally as the flower and colour of HOPE for a cure to cancer.

This will be a family fun day with two great curtain raiser games commencing at 9am to add to the carnival atmosphere.  These games will involve representative women and men from the Australian Defence Forces competing against representative Brisbane women’s and men’s teams.  This is a great opportunity to also support our Defence Forces personnel and for everyone to pitch in to help find a cure to cancer.

Everyone is welcome to attend this one-of-a-kind charity event.  Admission is free but a gold coin donation on entry would be appreciated.

Fans will also get the unique opportunity to win a spot playing on either team by getting online and auctioning for a position in this wonderful event.

In addition to all the action of the games, there will be a monster raffle with six great prizes including an autographed Broncos Retro jersey, Nike boots autographed by Gorden Tallis, Steve Renouf and Sam Thaiday presented in a glass box and two kicking tees one signed by Johnathon Thurston and Corey Parker.  Plenty of food, BBQ and drinks will also be available.

All funds raised will go to support cancer research programs supported through the Play for a Cure Foundation and to junior softball development through the Brisbane Softball Association.

The inspiration for the event comes from the sad passing in late 2009 of Jannita Dunn, elder sister of Rugby League great Gorden Tallis, and also Deb McColm, the wife of former long time Broncos kicking coach Graham McColm.   Both ladies had strong ties to the Brisbane Broncos and Brisbane Softball Association and for Graham and Gorden, it was only fitting to create an event in remembrance of them and to broaden the focus on others impacted by cancer.

The post 2016 Masters Raffle for Play for a Cure appeared first on Play for a Cure Foundation.

The game has been played and what a huge success it was.  An amazing array of talent (NRL and Softball) gathered with thanks to Brett ‘Noddy’ Kimmorley and Cindy Wann.  Of course the whole day was only happening because of the passion of Cindy to honour her friend, Tracey Dakin, who sadly passed away in July this year of brain cancer.   Play for a Cure Foundation is happy to host events and direct the funds as requested by the host. In this case Cindy has asked we donate funds, and honour our mission statement, to brain cancer research through the Mark Hughes Foundation.

At time of reporting we have raised just over $6000 and have a few more monies to come in and will hold one final auction item leading into Christmas with the aim to hit $7000.  You can help us reach this goal by donating online, simply click here or ‘like’ our Facebook page, and keep your eyes peeled for the auction that will be put up shortly!

The Players

*********************************************************************************************************************************** We are very excited to announce that our Yellow Socks charity softball challenge is moving to NSW (not permanently – the Brisbane Yellow Socks game is back for its 6th year in December!).

We are fortunate to be able to hold this event because of a passionate supporter, Cindy Wann who wants to help us find a cure for cancer, in particular brain cancer.  Funds from this event will go to The Mark Hughes Foundation to assist them achieve their goal  – to fund brain cancer research to decrease mortality rates and decrease the incident of brain cancer in Australia.

With thanks to Softball NSW the inaugural NSW game will be held at none other than the Olympic Softball stadium in Blacktown.  That in itself is exciting!

The game will provide an opportunity to watch some of the great current and past NRL footballers and Aussie and NSW softballers mix it up and take each other on in a 2 hour slowpitch match on the 25th September.

NRL legend Brett Kimmorley and Aussie Spirit shortstop Stacey McManus are the first 2 stars to sign up to this exciting new venture for Play for a Cure Foundation.

There will be an opportunity to have photos with your favourite stars and an autograph or two to be signed.

There will be raffles and silent auctions too!

Canteen facilities available.

Entry price is $10 per adult with children under 16 being free (gold coin donation welcome).

We are so excited to announce that not only are we hosting the Sportsman’s dinner again this year but we will be hosting it in the beautiful Marquee at Victoria Park Golf Complex!

Magnificent venue, beautiful views, 5 star food and beverages (with drinks on the table and waiters available to replenish (no bar lines!)), music entertainment and of course our sports stars, it’s sure to be a great night!

26th November from 6.00pm to midnight, arrive at 6.00pm for pre-dinner drinks in our own private area, then just before 7pm we head in to the magnificent Marquee room to have dinner, meet our sports guests and raise some money for cancer research.

We have the lovely Taylor Wilton and the fun rocking Vintage returning and we will be mixing things up a little this year so we can make it even more successful than last year’s inaugural event!

Be sure to bring some spare change with you, as we will be holding raffles with some fantastic prizes being drawn throughout the night. We will also be holding an auction as well as a silent auction. We will also have credit card facilities available, so any auction items won on the night, can either be paid for by cash or credit card on the night and you can take your winnings home with you!

All you once a year softballers and a few that play all the time, dust off your gloves and come play in the Play for a Cure Slowpitch Challenge.

Team entry fee is $500. Maximum numbers for a team is 12 and 4 women must be on the field at all times.  No experience, or gear required.  It’s all about having some fun for a good cause.
