Some all-time legends of the NRMA Brisbane Broncos are teaming- up with The Play for a Cure Foundation and the Brisbane Softball Association for the third Yellow Socks Charity Softball Challenge at the Downey Park Softball Complex, Green Terrace, Windsor, on Saturday 16th February 2013, from 11.30am.

All are welcome to attend this one-of-a-kind charity event. Admission is free but a gold coin donation on entry will be appreciated. All funds raised will go to support cancer research and awareness programs supported through the Play for a Cure foundation and to also support junior softball development through the Brisbane Softball Association.

The event this year will include an exciting home run hit out where both teams will go head-to- head to see who can hit the most home runs. Come along and see Gorden Tallis pitch to some of Australia’s greatest softballers.

The Broncos team will comprise a star studded lineup of Broncos legends including Gorden Tallis (P4AC Ambassador), Allan Langer, Steve Renouf, Michael Hancock, Tonie Carroll, Michael DeVere and Kerrod Walters.

The Aussie Softball All Stars will include all-time softball legends Joyce Lester (Australia’s longest serving softball captain), 4 time Olympian Melanie Roche (P4AC Ambassador), 3 time Olympian Brooke Wilkins, current Australian captain Stacey Porter along with other former national team stars.

More details on both teams are included on the following page.

The focus of the Yellow Socks Softball Challenge is remembering those have passed away from or who are impacted by cancer. The teams play in yellow socks as yellow is associated with the daffodil flower used internationally as the flower and colour of HOPE for a cure to cancer.

In addition to the celebrity softball game, there will be a major raffle with great prizes, plenty of food, drinks, stalls, and other activities which will add to the festive atmosphere of the day.

Kids be there from 10.45am to play some fun games and be in with the chance to win a signed poster of Darren Lockyer and Stacey Porter.

The event will also promote the game of softball as a fun sport providing great opportunities for keeping active and socialising with friends and family.

If you cannot make the game, tax deductible donations can be made directly to our cause by clicking here.

The inspiration for the Yellow Socks Softball Challenge was the passing of Deb McColm and Jannita Dunn from cancer in late 2009. Both Deb and Jannita had strong ties to the Brisbane Broncos and Brisbane Softball Association. Jannita is the elder sister of Broncos legend Gorden Tallis, and Deb’s husband, Graham, was a long-time Broncos Kicking Coach.

Nothing could dampen our spirits on a cold and miserable day in March 2012. Friends and families were gathering to have a McKellar Clan get together – and a day to raise some funds for Carol McKellar, who recently had been diagnosed with cancer. Unable to work whilst getting treatment, P4AC wanted to do whatever they could for Carol. Carol is the mother of our Ambassador, Kelly McKellar-Nathan, and like Kelly, she is much loved.

Carol had a rough time with her treatment so P4AC thought we could have the get together so she could have some much needed time with those that love her and raise some funds to allow Carol to pamper herself.

We booked time at the local swimming complex complete with our own pergola and BBQ area. P4AC founder Leigh started cooking the BBQ but was soon pushed out by the men in Carol’s life (and she was secretly pleased!) who cooked up plenty of sausages and steak to eat.

Along with the food (meat and salads), drinks were available to purchase and with approximately 50 people we conducted a raffle as well. Much needed funds were raised and handed over to Carol. But even more so, the day was a great success because there was plenty of laughter and good cheer. Carol had a great day and the smile on her face was priceless – exactly what one could ask for!

Thanks to the following for donating time, or items – Knighty (P4AC team player), Princess Charlotte Seafoods, Nicole from Hans Smallgoods, Juice hair care, Brumby’s Manly, Mariners Softball Club and Loafing by the Bay.

Thank you to everybody who came. At the time of this event Play for a Cure were unable to offer tax deductibe receipts when raising funds for cancer patients – something that will change shortly, but in March we couldn’t – so thank you for coming and for digging deep to help Carol and her family.

Another successful Yellow Socks Softball Challenge has been held and the day was a huge success!

With the event only running for one hour, we are very happy to report that we raised $3350! That’s a pretty good rate.

Brisbane Broncos are going to give us a full page spread in their monthly magazine, so considering their writer is a bonafide journalist, we think it might be best to wait until that article comes out and then you can read all about the day. For now we think you will be happy hearing of the amount raised – we are!

Here are some photos to keep you interested!

NEWSFLASH – NEWSFLASH! THE KING IS PLAYING!! WALLY LEWIS NOW A CONFIRMED

STARTER

BRISBANE BRONCOS LEGENDS PLAY SOFTBALL FOR CANCER

The Brisbane Softball Association and Play for a Cure Foundation are teaming-up again with the NRMA Brisbane Broncos for the second Yellow Socks Charity Softball Challenge.

All are welcome to attend this one-of-a-kind charity event which will be held at the Downey Park Softball Complex, Green Terrace, Windsor, on Saturday 11th February 2012, from 11.30am. Admission is free but a gold coin donation on entry will be appreciated.

The Broncos team will comprise a star studded lineup of Broncos legends including Wally Lewis, Allan Langer, Gorden Tallis, Steve Renouf, Michael Hancock, Tonie Carroll, Micheal DeVere, Kerrod Walters and Chris Johns.

The Aussie Softball All Stars will include all time softball legends Joyce Lester (Australia’s longest serving softball captain), Tanya Harding, Melanie Roche, current Australian captain Stacey Porter and other former national team stars.

More details on both teams are in the tables at the bottom of this post.

The inspiration for the inaugural Yellow Socks Challenge in December 2010 was the passing of Deb McColm and Jannita Dunn from cancer in late 2009.

Both Deb and Jannita had strong ties to the Brisbane Broncos and Brisbane Softball Association, with the pair being avid softball players as well as Jannita being the elder sister of Broncos legend Gorden Tallis, and Deb’s husband, Graham McColm, being a long-time Broncos Kicking Coach.

This year, the focus of the Yellow Socks Challenge will be broadened to remembering others who have passed away from or who are impacted by cancer.

The teams will again play in yellow socks as this colour is associated with the daffodil flower used internationally as the flower and colour of HOPE for a cure to cancer.

In addition to the celebrity softball game, there will be plenty of food, drinks and other fundraising activities which will add to the festive atmosphere of the day.

The feature raffle item will be an autographed and framed Broncos jersey signed by six Broncos Club captains – Wally Lewis, Gene Miles, Allan Langer, Kevin Walters, Gorden Tallis and Darren Lockyer.

The event will also endeavour to promote the game of softball as a great sport to be active and socialise with friends and family.

FOR MORE INFORMATION, please contact:

Graham McColm – 0400 897898 or media contact is Jason Greenhalgh – 0400 716166
