Today, during Breast Cancer Awareness month, we held our first high tea, and we were well attended at P4AC headquarters.

A few familiar faces, but more importantly, we met and enjoyed the company of a few new supporters and lovely ladies they are. You won’t be surprised to hear they are sporting folks of a similar ilk to us! Diamond sport fans but this time, baseball is their number 1 love! Thank you for coming ladies, thoroughly enjoyed your company!

We started with the presentation of Fifth Avenue Jewellery Collection by former Director of Play for a Cure, Kelli Oates. By having the party we were presented with a gift that you will all see soon enough, when we do our next raffle :). Part of the profits of the sales will also come to P4AC so thank you Kelli and Fifth Avenue Collection!

Yum, variety for all….

Final figures to come, however along with the small entry fee that the folks paid and because of the very kind donations from Cheryl-Lea Godfrey, Leigh, Woolworths Wynnum West, Fudge Queen, Elizabeth Woods & Carol McKellar and it looks like we will make over $400.

Lots of delicious food, and tea without teabags was served, along with some pink champagne. Each guest was provided with a bag of goodies, containing a ribbon pin, a pen and breast cancer information thanks to our favourite cancer research charity – Australian Cancer Research Foundation AND a pink P4AC wristband. Each guest also received a raffle ticket and the lucky winner Barb was given some jewellery.

Discussing the Jewellery catalogue – what do you like?

All in all a lovely way to spend a Sunday morning, not only enjoying the good company but knowing that we raised a small amount to help with Breast cancer research. Already looking forward to next October!

Thank you ladies for your support today – it means the world!

How good does that sound? It was as good as it sounds too!

Dressed up in fabulous 70’s fashion, a whole heap of generous folks joined our long time supporter, Stephanie Gill, in celebrating her 50th!

All 50th’s are special, but this one was just that little bit more special. Why you ask? Because Stephanie turned HER big night into a fundraiser for us. Instead of gifts she asked her friends and family to donate $1 per her every wonderful year on earth to come to the party where all the funds received were donated back to our charity. WOW how fabulous is that?!

Stephanie’s guests were provided with drinks and great food all night, and this was all due to Steph’s generosity! Not one cent from the partygoers payments was touched and and as a result, Stephanie donated over $2100 to Play for a Cure Foundation.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-3974 size-medium" src="https://www.playforacure.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/IMG_7996-300x200.jpg" alt="When Steph tells the partygoers how much she has raised for our charity! Fantastic!!

We are beyond excited and absolutely grateful for this wonderful kind gesture. Stephanie you are certainly one of a kind and we love that you love us!

For all the fabulous photos from the night, click here -with thanks to the equally fabulous Rose Darroch!

We barely got the team on the field and even then we had our ups and downs. Kelly ruptured her Achilles and we wish her the speediest of recoveries. Rissa pulled her hamstring and even through restricted, played up a storm. Debutant Cheri pulled her groin, Kelli got ill, and I was sick with the flu! Anne had broken her ankle earlier in the year and couldn’t play, another debutant Noeleen hurt her knee before the weekend even started. Brooke was away in France, Tracy away with her family, Frankie started a new job and couldn’t get to the weekend, and Haylea and Mel had commitments that meant they could only play a few games (and for that I thank you (it kept the team on the field)) but we got through the weekend and made our 5th consecutive final! Thank you to Tania King for sitting on our bench in the Grand Final! Alas we didn’t win the final, going down to the team we beat last year – congratulations Southside Stingers!

BUT we may have lost the final but our weekend was still a success. In fact it was our best weekend yet! We raised over $5000 through raffle ticket sales and the very kind donations of those brave enough to do the Ice Challenges that are running around on Facebook at the moment, as well as individual donations – thanks to Toowoomba Warriors (Deb Prouten and her team), Southside Stingers (TEK and her team), the Qld Schoolgirls team (glad to see your ‘jar’ was not a full this year!!), Carby, Steve Walk Concreting and Trotty! Thanks to the P4AC Masters team who pulled the prizes together and sold lots of tickets to ensure 2014 was our most successful Masters yet! Thanks to Mark Beitz of Bayside Bartons who once again purchased 100 tickets in the raffle (and won a prize!). We were aiming to break the $20000 raised at this tournament alone, and just fell short, so I figure we can all rest up, start stretching now and come back next year and smash that target! We have now raised over $75000 and that’s pretty cool – $100K is our next target!

Thanks to the SQ for allowing us to continue fundraising, to the softball community for your continued support but most of all to the team – champion bunch of girls that I am honoured to call my friends.

In our 5th year at Softball Queensland Masters, we are hoping to crack the $20000 raised mark at this tournament alone. If we succeed in cracking the $20K mark, we will also crack the $70000 raised in total since we started in December 2010. Our aim is $100000 (and then beyond) so anything you can do to help us aid cancer research is appreciated.

Update 22/4/14

We raised over $7000 – our best year yet! And we are already planning on how we can make it better next year!!

Want to relive a little from the day? Check out this cool vid – thanks Rose Darroch!

Cancer researchers!!!

They will be when we tally up the final amount raised from our annual day, played out on Saturday the 8th February, 2014.

The rains stayed away this year (thankfully) and the game was played out on a hot sunny day at Downey Park.

With the players having assembled and having had their team photos taken, it was straight into it with a touch football game warm up being played in the outfield of the Audrey McLaughlin International Diamond. Interestingly enough, the Play for a Cure Legends knocked off the fancied Brisbane Broncos legends – a sign of things to come?

This year, as part of my welcoming speech, we did an Acknowledgement of Country by Aunty Valda Coolwell and had a presentation to the Australian Cancer Research Foundation where the cheque was accepted by ACRF board member, Mr Tim Crommelin. It was a good feeling, knowing our hard work for the past year has paid off!

Mr Tim Crommelin accepts $10000 from us on behalf of ACRF

The game started with lots of hits and this year the introduction of the young players, kept those Broncos on their toes! It looked like the Broncos were going to steal the game away, again, in the last inning but the P4AC legends held strong and took out the game 12-9 – finally I say

The raffle prizes were drawn with lots of happy folks claiming their prizes – special thanks to our supporters who donated – Bizzare Framing, Nudgee Golf Course, Allan Langer and the Broncos!

Final funds are being tallied so we will let you know the final outcome as soon as known.

Please find the links below for all of our supporters and I must thank the following people who did so much to make the day the success it was: The teams – Play for a Cure Legends – Brooke, Smacka, Haylea, Mel, Chelsea, Porter, Rissa, Paige, Georgia, Maggie and auction winner Toni. Coach Frankie.

Broncos Legends – Gordy, Ben, Darren, Shane, Kevin, Alfie, Scott, Michael, Tilly and auction winner Brooke (via Scott and Bonita). Coach Jordy.

Amazing donations from Tim Crommelin, Saints softball club, Redsox softball club, Steve Walk Concreting and those on the day and online.

And the amazing helpers – too many to mention! But special shout out to Graham, Jeff, Wally, Tony, Alana, Geoff, Dave, Tanya, Corrie, Scott, Sheri, Rose, Ron, Scuff, Pinkie Shianne, Anne and those BSA players and officials.

And of course the spectators! And of course anybody I may have forgotten (sorry!).

From the bottom of my heart and on behalf of the P4AC and BSA (I’m wearing both hats) – THANK YOU!!

To be held on Saturday 8th February at the Downey Park Softball Complex, the event will be hosted by the Play for a Cure Foundation and the Brisbane Softball Association, with the support of the ‘Deadly Choices’ Health Initiative.

Softball legends will include three time Olympian Brooke Wilkins, current Australian captain & Olympian Stacey Porter and current ‘Aussie Spirit’ players Mel Weaver and Chelsea Forkin. Australia’s longest serving softball captain and Olympian Joyce Lester will also be on hand to entertain the crowd.

The inspiration for the event comes from the sad passing of Jannita Dunn, elder sister of Rugby League great Gorden Tallis and Deb McColm the wife of former long time Broncos kicking coach Graham McColm, in late 2009. Both women had strong ties to the Brisbane Broncos and Brisbane Softball Association and for Graham and Gorden it was only fitting to create an event in remembrance of them and to broaden the focus on others impacted by cancer.

“I feel humbled to see the people who are selflessly giving their time to find a cure for cancer” McColm stated.

Since the inaugural event four years ago, the Play for a Cure Yellow Socks Charity Softball Challenge has grown each year and is expected to attract its biggest crowd this year.

The day will begin with a warm up session of Touch Rugby League before players take to the pitch to battle it out in the name of cancer.

Aside from being treated to a star studded softball match, attendees can also take part in free rock climbing, face painting, Zumba, traditional games and other free, fun activities coordinated by the ‘Deadly Choices’ crew.

Deadly Choices is a health initiative aimed at engaging with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to promote healthy living and regular health check-ups. It aligns with the Play for a Cure Foundation and Brisbane Softball Association’s promotion of sport and healthy living for all.

Manager of the Deadly Choices initiative Ian Lacey sees the Play for a Cure Yellow Socks Charity Softball Challenge as a perfect opportunity to draw light on an important initiative while encouraging more people to get in and get a health check.

“It is important that we support this event to encourage more people to come in and get a health check while raising awareness around finding a cure for cancer,” Lacey said.

The event also aims to bring to light the great social and health opportunities involved in taking part in the sport of softball.

The teams will suit up in yellow socks representing the daffodil flower used internationally as the flower and colour of HOPE for a cure to cancer.

Fans will also get the unique opportunity to win a spot playing on each team by getting online and auctioning for a position in this wonderful event.

To win a place on the team got to www.playforacure.com.au/auction-page/ and click on the bid tab. The top two bids will win a spot on the teams. The auction will open on Thursday 30th January at 5pm and close on Thursday 6th February at 5pm. The successful bidders will be contacted by email with payments accepted through PayPal.

All are welcome to attend this one-of-a-kind charity event. Admission is free but a gold coin donation on entry would be appreciated. There will be a major raffle with great prizes, plenty of food, drinks, & the aforementioned fun participation activities, which will add to the festive atmosphere of the day.

All funds raised will go to support cancer research programs supported through the Play for a Cure Foundation and to junior softball development through the Brisbane Softball Association.
