Play for a Cure – 15 Years Strong
Founded by me, Leigh Martyn, in December 2010, Play for a Cure Ltd was born from personal loss and a powerful drive to make a difference in cancer research. After losing my father, stepfather, a best mate, and several close friends to cancer, I began fundraising under the Play for a Cure banner in early 2010—raising nearly $8,000 for Cancer Council Queensland (CCQ). That same year, I was honoured as CCQ’s Fundraising Newcomer of the Year.
With generous pro bono support from Norton Rose Fulbright, the foundation was officially registered as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) charity on 3rd December 2010—just one day before our first major fundraiser: the unforgettable Yellow Socks Charity Softball Game against the Brisbane Broncos.
A special shoutout to Brooke Wilkins and Kelli Oates, our inaugural directors, whose early support helped shape the foundation’s direction and impact.
Today, Play for a Cure Ltd is a registered public company and a proud contributor to cancer research through both the Play for a Cure Foundation and the Play for a Cure Personal Foundation, with full ACNC registration and fundraising licenses.
To our board members, volunteers, and supporters—I thank you. Your dedication has kept us going for 15 years and counting (2025).
Sincerely,
