For starters, the team that started it all, all those years ago when we first wandered in to the world of Masters, the Toowoomba Warriors. We played against them that year (2010) and it was an absolute hoot. Playing Masters, we knew then, would be fun. That year and every year since, the team have donated to our charity, instead of buying trinkets for the other teams. A novel and fantastic idea. We know that when we see Deb and her teammates walking over to us that they will be incredibly generous. But today!? WOW is really all that can be said. The Toowoomba crew pulled out all stops to get the following sponsors on board and again donated themselves to donate to us…….wait for it………….. $1800!

Our most wonderful ongoing sponsor Carrie Rose from Rosie’s Early Learning again donated $500, as well as walking the park, shaking the pan AND playing for our team. That also contributed in many ways to raising such a good amount this weekend. Thank you so much Carrie.

Slayers from Sydney were amazing, many of the team contributed their own individual donations amounting to over $300. Lovely ladies and all (well most) from the perfect Northern Beaches. A little bit of reminiscing occurred when meeting them today for the first time. Thank you so much ladies. We hope you enjoyed your weekend.

To Dodgers, who donated $150, thank you again for your continued generosity. We really are so grateful to you and your team Tan Aunties (what fun it is playing you guys), thank you too for donating instead of buying trinkets

Lastly to those that simply put in their loose coin and to those that tried guessing the gumballs (to see the list of winner, click here), we thank you. The total raised for the weekend is $3495.53. All of this will go to cancer research so although we didn’t win the gold, the charity really did win!

Another year over, when I am sure there are many tired and sore bodies having an early night. Thanks again to those that support us, thanks to those in our team, especially those that travelled long distances, and hopefully we get to do it all again next year.

What. we hear you say? We are mixing things up and want you to guess how many red gum balls are in our drink dispenser. And to ensure we can pick a winner we will ask that you also provide a number for how many black sweets are in the dispenser. Here’s a hint….the dispenser holds 3.5L. Simple right?

With multiple prizes up for grabs, the closest guess without going over will be the winner and the next closest will be 2nd and so on.

Our raffles over the years at the Softball Queensland Masters’ tournaments, have raised over $30,000. A huge contribution from our softball community (so grateful) to the $205,000 we have now raised for cancer research.

You can buy online today (click here) and once we receive your funds we will be in contact to capture your guesses or alternatively come down to Slacks Creek over the weekend of 3-5 August to support the team and make your guess then.

Big thanks to our donors* who contributed to our multi raffle prizes:

Well the run has been completed, all 58kms of it. It started out as something I was curious to see if I could complete it, turning into a big fundraising effort with large amounts of support from many. If you have been following the day was quite ideal for such an event, a little blowy and wet but cool definitely better than a 30 degree day. The run started out a little daunting but once I was under way I switched off and let the screaming of whatever song I was listening to take me off step by step. Before heading off I had made a plan to stop at every hill and walk up them all, this was something I stuck with and I firmly believe that it is what got me through. As far as food was concerned I had gel’s that I took every 5kms and I had baby food satchels that I devoured every 7.5kms. With that I now know why babies only like the fruit baby food, chicken and vegetables did not taste as good as it sounds!!! Probably about 40kms in I did have a bit of trouble, my left leg cramped up bad enough to which I could see the full outline of my thigh muscle through my skins. I slowed up a little and stretched out my stride a bit more which seemed to help break up the cramp. Overall it was a great run, I had left believing it would take me 8 hours. I completed it in 7hrs 32 mins!!! I was 13th in my age group as well (BRAVO FROM P4AC).

I really want to take this opportunity to thank a few people. To begin with the RAAF and more important 24 squadron, instead of being concerned with my trying to complete such a feat I was instantly offered support, and 6 of our personnel including my XO donated their time to manning an aide station and meeting me at the end of the run. I would like to thank Chris Sanderson for following me and being at every aide station to cheer me on, dragging his pregnant partner along with him, which whom had a healthy baby son the very next day. Congratulations guys!!! (CONGRATS FROM P4AC too!) Thank you to my wife and two boys who have shuffled their lives around my training regime and trail running days. Thank you to Play for a Cure for being such a great foundation and making my choice for fundraising such an easy one, and the constant messages of support. Thank you to my mother for making me the stubborn, determined man that I have become – I definitely couldn’t have made it through without the never give up attitude you have instilled into me. Last but definitely not least thank you to everyone that has supported me through this journey and have made a donation or sent me constant words of encouragement they have been very overwhelming and every word definitely helped me get over that line!!!

I have to say this is the last big run I will possibly be doing for ever, whilst it was a great challenge it did take its toll on my body during a lot of my training runs and the run itself and I’m just not in the business of testing fate. Only injury I did end up with is I believe I’m about to lose a toe nail from the constant stress of my feet hitting the front of my shoes going downhill. So really I can say that I was very lucky with only getting away with that. I do plan on playing ADF Softball each year so the fundraising for Play for a Cure will most definitely not end . Thank you so much everyone for everything!!! The option to donate is being left open for the next few weeks as I believe an article on my run is being published next week in the RAAF news!!

Intimo prides itself on championing women every day through Feel Good experiences and Fantastic Fits. This unique Intimo ethos perfectly aligns with the overarching message of International Women’s Day: to empower, uplift and praise all of the wonderful women across the globe. It’s for these reasons that it’s so important to Intimo that we make a generous and conscious effort to celebrate this momentous day on Thursday 8th March 2018.

Over a 36-hour period across International Women’s Day, VIP clients that purchase a Bra and Brief set from either the Maisie or Umbrella collection will receive an extra special gift with their purchase, compliments of Intimo. You will be able to choose between the Umbrella Bralette and the Maisie Chemise as a free gift to say ‘let’s celebrate women!’

The Umbrella set is purple which is the colour of International Women’s Day and Maisie teal which is colour of Ovarian cancer. Placing an order with your consultant, who has chosen Play for a Cure Foundation as their chosen charity, will ensure 10% of all profits will be donated to Ovarian cancer (the silent killer) research. Play for a Cure Foundation is volunteer run and guarantee 100% of all profits from the fundraiser will be passed on.

My Training thus far:

I have just realised it has almost been a month since my last blog. I do apologise, I have been away on a course but it hasn’t hindered my training too much.

So we left off where I had learned a valuable lesson and needed to implement a training regime rather than just going out and running. So after using my buddy Google I found a regime written by SiS (Science in Sport) designed for Marathon running. On the 21st of Jan I was able to do a training leg on the trail I will be running on, it was 12km’s and I completed it in 1hr and 14mins. Not a great time but given the distance I am aiming for the slower the better at this stage. So my new regime has involved the following:

Mondays are a rest day, Tuesdays have been an 8km Tempo run which is usually a pace a bit faster than the norm. My average on a Tuesday has gone from 51 mins to 48mins. Wednesday has been a rest day but is slowly being replaced by work PT which has me using muscles I do not use when running. Thursdays are usually an 8km Fartlek session, Fartlek is a matter of picking different areas during my run and breaking out in a sprint, there is no set distance – just what I can push out. My average on a Thursday has been 47mins and is about to be replaced with some cross-training sessions. Friday is a rest. Saturdays is suppose to be where I punch out my longer distances, unfortunately with my training and work I haven’t really had much of a chance to achieve this but will be changing now I am back home. Sundays are suppose to be a small 6 – 7km steady run, again I have had to shuffle some things around. On Sunday the 4th of Feb I was able to punch out a run up Huon Hill in Bandiana. I followed the goat tracks up the front and then ran the road down the back, all equating to 17.3km’s and I completed it in 1h 47min. I am quite happy with this effort as it didn’t seem to be too hard which to me means I am on my way with my training.

My diet:

Well my diet has pretty much gone downhill. It is not easy trying to eat right and keep carbs up when living in Army barracks for two weeks. The positive to this is my body is conditioning to being able to rely on it’s own carb and fuel stores to get me where I need to be. My training hasn’t seemed to struggle as a result which is definitely a positive.

In conclusion:

I do have a specialist appointment this Friday to look at my small niggles, knees and shins. Also we will look at how I run and my stride and work on any small changes I can make to better my effort and prevent any injuries. The RAAF have jumped on board, not only have they helped me out by raising some funds whilst I was away but they are going to be publishing a before and after write up about this event, which I am hoping really gets the Play for a Cause name even more out there. I am currently feeling really good about how it is all coming together, we are 8 weeks out and I am confident that I will reach my goal. I want to thank everyone for the added support and dealing with my constant social media updates, knowing I have the backing I have and the reasons I am doing this really helps in giving me the added motivation I need.

Footnote from P4AC

Richard we think you are amazing and are thrilled to advise that thus far you have raised $288.55. Every little bit counts, as you know.

My Training thus far:

So I have been asked to write a fortnightly blog keeping everyone informed on how my training is going leading up to the 58km Trail run. The last couple of weeks have definitely been interesting. I have come back from Christmas and New Year holidays having indulged quite heavily in food and alcohol. This has not stopped me from hitting the ground running though (excuse the pun). My first day back, Monday the 8th I went for an easy 5km run maintaining a pace of 5.1per km and my heart rate was quite steady, so far so good. Followed by Wednesday the 10th, trying to rest every other day, I stepped it up to a 10km maintaining a 5.6 pace. Friday the 12th I managed 13km’s still maintaining a 5.7 pace and heart rate so far so good. On Sunday my family decided to show myself support and show me a great running track that they could ride on whilst I followed. I completed 10.3kms in 1hr and 3mins with a lot of starting and stopping, it was good to get out to an unknown area with inclines and declines. Come Tuesday the 16th I really pushed myself and completed 20.2kms in 1hr 57mins maintaining a pace of 5.8mins per km. Now this really put me on cloud nine and made me feel that if I could achieve this in just a week I could achieve anything!!. Cue in Thursday…. My quads and shins definitely were not happy and very reluctant to let me do any running so my completion was 9.7kms in a dismal 1hr and 31mins, I did manage some hill sprints but other than that I walked away very disheartened!! In the last 24hrs I have had to take a step back and check my ego at the door and accept that if I not only want to complete 58kms but be competitive at the same time I need to seek out a proper training guide and start following the advice of the professionals.

Nutrition:

Now at this point I am definitely not someone that knows exactly what he is doing, but I do know what my body needs and doesn’t need to help get me there. I am Australian and I do like my beer!! This unfortunately does not help at all… so we have had to make an effort to cut this out of my diet, so far so good.. haven’t bitten my kids heads off just yet!! I try to do meal prep and as everyone is well aware food is expensive especially anything that is healthy for you, with a family of four it is not easy to buy all the yuppy healthy typical meal ingredients. I do love slow cookers when it comes to meal prep because it means on a Sunday morning I can get up throw everything in and then portion it out in the afternoon. So far my meal is simply Chicken breast, spinach, chicken stock, tomatoes, black beans, brown rice, sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, tomato puree, can of chopped tomatoes, carrots and pretty much anything else I can find in the crisper. Surprisingly it tastes good and full of carbs and protein that I need to get me through my training sessions with energy to spare. When it comes to supplements I have my share too, before I go into everything else I use I want to point out do not take everything I am saying as gospel I am a firm believer that everyone is different and everyone’s body handles different foods, supplements and stresses differently than other people. Whilst running I use Science in Sport Gels, there are a lot of people that say Gels sometime upsets their bellies and they are forced to do a quick dash into the bushes. Lucky for my I do not have this problem… yet. So my training routine is pre-workout before a run, I like to use C4. During my run every 5km or half an hour I will have a Gel, I like the ones that have electrolytes instead of caffeine in them, only because sometime I struggle to keep myself hydrated but not much of an issue maintaining energy levels. Post run I use a post recovery also made by Science in sport and I am currently looking at some other protein supplements to help with my muscle development. I do have energy bars too that I will introduce once my distances get a bit further along.

So that is my current regime and what the last fortnight has brought me. I have learned a very important lesson and that I am more stubborn than I realise, which will probably get me over that line!! Fundraising has started to kick off and I do want to say THANK YOU to everyone that is supporting me and following my journey – it means a lot and gives me that extra push to not give up. Hopefully in the next fortnight I will have some better progress with the new program I have printed off. This Sunday I have a chance to do a small 10km of the track I will be running on so I will also inform everyone on how that goes.
